It Was an Emergency. The Doctors Were Supposed to Remove His Appendix. Unfortunately, They Did Not.
The appendectomy, the surgical removal of the appendix, is one of the most common surgical procedures in the US and globally. But recently, a man in Washington state saw his appendectomy turn into a nightmare due to the alleged carelessness of a hospital and its doctors.
George Piano, a Washington state resident, had serious abdominal pain, was diagnosed with appendicitis, and taken into surgery so doctors could remove his inflamed appendix. However, his doctors were "unable" to locate his appendix and, instead, removed a part of his bowel.
Because of this alleged botched surgery, says Mr. Piano, his long-term health will never be the same.

Amazingly, the Garrow Law Firm has a similar case of a doctor leaving the inflamed appendix inside the patient after an appendectomy, requiring our client to undergo 2 more painful surgeries with serious lasting complications. We'll post more about it soon!

Elderly Resident Froze to Death After Being Locked Outside of Assisted Living Facility
Sometimes, a resident of an assisted living facility, nursing home, or even a hospital patient may have a decreased mental capacity related to dementia or temporary mental status change related to medication, disease, or traumatic injury. In those situations, an assisted living facility, nursing home or hospital must take precautions to ensure that the elderly or sick resident or patient does not unintentionally “wander off” and place him or herself in danger.
The healthcare facility must have policies and procedures in place to ensure that a resident or patient does not elope and leave the facility.
Unfortunately, this assisted living facility’s policies failed, were not implemented, or it just didn’t have any policy at all to make sure that the resident did not wander off.

2 LOCAL HOSPITALS LED THE NATION IN SUING PATIENTS FOR UNPAID MEDICAL BILLS: THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA (UVA) AND VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY (VCU)
Both UVA and VCU conducted high volume debt-collection efforts against former patients, many of whom were low-income and uninsured. "Researchers found that between January 2018 and July 2020, VCU initiated court action against patients 17,806 times — more than any other institution reviewed. UVA’s medical center came in second, initiating legal action 7,107 times." This analysis was done by the Johns Hopkins University and news site Axios. Their decision to discontinue such aggressive legal action against former patients followed a 2019 investigation by Kaiser Health News and published in the Washington Post that focused on the two institutions. Also, the Virginia Mercury first reported on the volume of medical debt lawsuits filed by Virginia hospitals in 2018.

Police Force Undercover Addict to Buy Heroin He Overdosed and Died
A Richmond, VA mother filed a wrongful death suit for what she claims was her son's death by police of a fentanyl-laced heroin overdose. The problem? The police coerced him to purchase heroin while he was an addict as part of his role as an informant.
According to the lawsuit, the defendants threatened Troy Howlett with arrest and/or having his bond revoked, or serving additional jail time, as a means to force him to buy illegal drugs as an informant. At the time of his death, Howlett had pending drug charges, according to online court records. There's more to the story in this Richmond Times-Dispatch article, including how the police disturbed Howlett's funeral by arresting his best friend during the middle of the proceeding.
