Dog Bites – A Serious Problem for Those Injured

Dog bites can cause serious and lasting problems. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), about 4.5 million people are bitten each year, and about 1 in 5 require medical attention. Some injuries are so significant that many of those bitten require reconstructive surgery.

Who is most at risk?

Children: The rate of dog bite–related injuries for children is highest for those ages 5 to 9 years, and children are more likely than adults to receive medical attention for dog bites. Adult Males: Among adults, males are more likely than females to be bitten. People with dogs in their homes: Having a dog in the household is associated with a higher incidence of dog bites. As the number of dogs in the home increases, so does the incidence of dog bites. Adults with two or more dogs in the household are five times more likely to be bitten than those living without dogs at home.

What should you do if bitten?

Even if it does not appear serious, you should seek medical attention immediately. Infections can occur with even minor bites, so seeking medical care is important. Dog bites are preventable! See the suggestions offered by the CDC here.

Can the dog owner be held accountable?

Yes, but you must move quickly so a proper investigation can be conducted. Sometimes, homeowner's insurance can be used to compensate victims, even if the dog owner does not own the home where the dog resides.
